Muscari 'Valerie Finnis' Flower Bulbs

Velvety light blue flowers create a gorgeous display of upright spikes from mid to late spring. Muscari 'Valerie Finnis' provides stunning texture and color, and will naturalize nicely. She is not your typical Muscari!  She makes a stunning impact when mass planted in Muscari "rivers."  Grape Hyacinth prefers rich well drained soil.  Underplant and surround with tulips.  A midspring bloomer, she is beloved by butterflies, bees and pollinators, requiring a minimum cold-frame of 6 weeks to root properly.  She is deer, rabbit and squirrel resistant.  

Plant her in the fall when soil temperatures are 55 F or below to ensure proper root development; with the optimal planting time being when nighttime temperatures are 40-50 degrees.  The ideal soil pH level for bulbs is between 6 and 7.  

Store bulbs in a cool dry spot with good air circulation and low humidity.  Most bulbs can tolerate temperatures between 38 and 70 F.  You will want to protect them from heat, frost and strong sunlight.  Ideally, you should plant your bulbs right away for best results.  Healthy bulbs should be firm to the touch.

Bulbs hate "wet feet."  Avoid planting bulbs in areas with poor drainage or standing water.  Planting when the soil temperature is too warm is the primary cause of stunted blooms.  Road salt and de-icing compounds are harmful to bulbs.  You should steer clear of areas where snow accumulates.  Avoid planting too shallow. It's essential that bulbs are planted at least 3 times their height into the soil. Plant bulbs firmly in the soil with their pointy end up and basal plate down. Not all bulbs will right themselves underground. So, set them up for success by planting them properly!

Plant your bulbs in a location where they will receive at least half a day of sun. Plant them away from invasive tree and perennial root systems that can strangle bulb roots and compete for water and nutrition.
