Crocosmia 'Lucifer' blooms in summer with brilliant scarlet flowers on arching stems that hummingbirds cannot resist. Plant Crocosmia bulbs (corms) in spring for eye-popping blooms and excellent cut flowers.
One of the hardiest cultivars, Crocosmia 'Lucifer' adds an exotic flair to your garden. Beginning in midsummer through early fall in some climates, brilliant flame red flowers stand in rows on wiry, gracefully arched stems that are perfect for vases. Crocosmia's broad, sword-like leaves are appealing to the eye even when not in bloom, providing a spiky textured element to your landscape.
Note: Crocosmia may not bloom the first season, especially in colder zones, but it is perennial and once established it will reward you with magnificent blooms. Growing and nurturing her requires patience.
Crocosmia does best in rich, moisture-retentive soils, in full or partial sun. While they will survive in part shade, best flower production is obtained in full sun, with the exception of hot summer climates where part shade helps the flowers last longer. Keep soil moist but well drained. They do not enjoy hot, dry sites. Choose a spot sheltered from cold drying winds. Plant Crocosmia in spring, when there is no threat of frost and the soil has warmed up.
Remove spent blooms to encourage new blooms. Cut the stems back to where they meet the leaves. After blooming is over, keep the leaves so that the plant can focus its energy back into its bulb for next summer’s blooming. The leaves give an energy charge to the bulb through photosynthesis and for this they need to keep their leaves. Cut back the foliage almost to ground level when the leaves wither and die back.
We package our bulbs carefully and ship them quickly from our greenhouse to you. They arrive safely, ready to plant and thrive in your garden! Because we want your plant to thrive, we include detailed planting instructions with your purchase to help you get started.
