Lycoris Spider Lily 'Sprengeri' Flower Bulbs

A stunning addition to your garden, Lycoris 'Sprengeri' or Spider Lily is a member of the Amaryllis family and a native of central China. She produces narrow-linear, strap-like, medium to dark green leaves (each to 16" long) in spring, but - like magic! - they disappear by mid-summer. Naked flower scapes (typically rising to 1.5’ tall) emerge from the ground in late summer, each bearing an umbel of 4-6 exquisite trumpet-shaped flowers. Each flower (to 2” long) has six slightly reflexed, petal-like tepals and short stamens (nearly as long as the perianth). Stunning flowers feature pink throats with tie dye blue shading on the tepals that often ends with ink blue tepal tips. Truly a party for your eyes!  And her exquisite flowers have a wonderful fragrance!  

Plants in the genus Lycoris are sometimes commonly called resurrection flower, surprise lily, magic lily or naked ladies because the leaves disappear in summer with the naked flower scapes seemingly rising from the dead in late summer. Plants of L. Sprengeri are sometimes commonly called tie dye surprise lily because of their unique flower colors.   

She is a great friend to butterflies and pollinators, while resisting critters.  She is winter hardy to USDA Zones 7 -10 where bulbs may be grown in organically rich, medium moisture, well-drained soils in full sun to light shade. Best flowering is in part sun. North of USDA Zone 6, Lycoris 'Sprengeri' bulbs should be grown in large and deep containers that are overwintered indoors.

Storage . . . Store flower bulbs in a cool dry spot with good air circulation and low humidity until you are ready to plant them.  Most flower bulbs should tolerate temperatures between 38-70 F.  However, you will want to protect them from heat, frost and strong sunlight.  Your flower bulbs should be firm to the touch.

Planting . . . Plant bulbs 9” apart in fall with the top 1/4" of the neck of each bulb exposed. Plants appreciate even moisture during their growing season, but may be best sited in areas where soils remain relatively dry during the summer dormant season. Plants will naturalize by bulb-offsets and form small colonies over time. Plants are best left undisturbed in the soil.  Most bulbs require a minimum cold frame of 6 weeks to root properly.  The optimal planting time is when nighttime temperatures are 40-50 degrees.  Flower bulbs hate "wet feet!"  Never plant them in areas with poor drainage or standing water.  Planting bulbs when the soil temperature is too warm is the primary cause of stunted blooms.  Road salt and de-icing compounds are harmful to flower bulbs; avoid areas where plowed snow accumulates.
